Queensland Coast - Storms 21 August 2007

A deep low moving slowly north along the coast of south-east Queensland is causing significant storm damage.

Tuesday 21 August 2007

  • More than 34,000 homes and businesses lost power, mostly on Brisbane's northern bayside and the Sunshine Coast.
  • Beaches on the Sunshine and Gold coasts were closed.
  • Some barge services across Moreton Bay to North Stradbroke Island were cancelled.
  • At 11pm Cape Moreton recorded the strongest wind gust, of 124 km/h, which is equivalent to a category two cyclone, according to forecasters.

  • Electricity distributor Energex said 7,700 homes were without power mostly in areas of the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane's north.
  • Over 800 homes blacked out at Bellbowrie in Brisbane's west.
  • Rail services between Caboolture and Gympie were out for three hours from around 6.30am.
  • The weather bureau has issued a severe weather warning for dangerous Surf on the south-east coast and Fraser Island.
  • This afternoon 3500 households remain without power, mostly in the hinterland region. 
  • SEQWater said an average of 18 millimetres fell on the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine dams overnight, bringing the total rainfall on the dams to 53mm since Saturday.
  • The Sunshine Coast Airport remains open although the high winds have affected some flights. Virgin Blue cancelled Flight DJ593 from Melbourne and Flight DJ223 from Sydney, both of which were to land around midday.

Forecast

Brisbane is expecting galeforce winds of around 60 km/h throughout today and tomorrow, while coastal areas would continue to be battered by 90 km/h.
