Indonesian Forest Fires

News reports in early August 2008 indicated around 450 fires, mostly from West Kalimantan, were burning with around 2000 fire fighters deployed.   These fires are generally attributed to traditional farming methods in the deliberate clearing of land for cultivation by farmers (65%), timber and plantation firms (35%). Depending on the wind the smoke causes a haze over Singaore, Malaysia and Thailand.  This goes beyond the immediate threat of fire to property (commercial and jungle) and workers, and is a health hazard in other countries threatening tourism.  It has also disrupted air traffic this season.

Last year's fires totalled 35,000. With less rain expected this dry season a higher tally is predicted.

The impact of the haze to global greenhouse gas emissions and climate change is now being studied.

The annual clearing is caused by the clearing of peatlands which cover approximately 27 million hectares in South-East Asia.  They are estimated to contain around 42,000 million tonnes of soil carbon. This carbon is released when peatlands are drained for cultivation, particularly oil palm plantations.
