Torrential Rain hits north of Sydney, NSW, Australia.  Severe weather is experienced by much of NSW, particularly the Central Coast and Hunter region.  A section of the Old Pacific Highway collapsed at Somersby at about 4pm.  The State Emergency Service responds to more than 2000 calls for assistance.  Some 60,000 homes are without power.  Flooding forces the evacuation of several properties at Dungog and Muswellbrook in the Hunter region.

Warnings are issued to several hundred residents in the Hunter region, particularly Singleton and Maitland, that they may need to evacuate their homes due to rising flood waters.  The Bureau of Meteorology reports an average of 140mm of rain fell on the Hunter River Valley in the 24 hours to 6am on Saturday 9 June 2007.  Fallen power lines pose a problem.  Flood waters interrupt road and rail access to the region.

People who suffer a serious injury, have lost their home or whose dwelling is uninhabitable for 48 hours or more can claim a benefit of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child. The benefit can be claimed by contacting contact Centrelink on 180 2211.  Some 5,000 people evacuate their homes.

The Hunter River peaks at around 10.4 - 10.7 metres easing concerns for the town of Maitland, NSW.  Levees hold.  Residents within areas protected by levees are informed that it is safe to return to their homes.  Rising river levels pose a threat to downstream towns including Raymond Terrace, Hexham, Carrington, Hinton and Maryville, NSW.  There are also concerns for Newcastle on the Central Coast.  Streets and stormwater drains in Newcastle are cleared in anticipation of flooding.  The Insurance Council of Australia reports that more than 15,000 insurance claims have been submitted since 8 June 2007.

Media reports suggest the damage is in excess of $100 million.  This is soon increased to $200 million.  News reports indicate that a spokesman for the Insurance Council of Australia advises that it is correct that, as a general rule, policies covered flooding caused by a downpour, but they did not usually cover a rise in river levels.  The town of Hinton remains cut-off by flood waters.

Thursday, 14 June 2007
The rail and port at Newcastle remain interrupted as a result of the flood waters.  Coal supplies to Australian and International customers are also interrupted. News reports suggest the number of insurance claims has increased to 26,000 the value of which may exceed $270 million.
