Forest Fires Athens 27 June 2007

Since 19 June, Greece has been in a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit).

14 major fires have been reported including:

  • Mount Parnitha National Park, the last major green area of Athens.
  • Thassalia, central Greece.
  • Pelion in the northeast of Greece.
  • Agia, central Greece.
  • Central region of Magnesia.
  • Semi-rural area of Langadas east of the northern capital of Salonika.
  • Rural outskirts of Athens from Schimatari in the northeast.
  • Northwest Peloponnese.

Two volunteer fire fighters died in Agia, central Greece.

28 June 2007

More than 100 fires have broken out across Greece since yesterday.

Thick black smoke has grounded airborne fire fighting efforts.

Hundreds of fire fighters and army conscripts are fighting the fires.

Evacuated were:

  • Air force radar station with 60 employees on Mount Parnitha.
  • Mont Parnes Casino.
  • Summer holiday camps on the mountain 25 km (16 miles) north of Athens.

29 June 2007

120 fires have broken out in Greece but most have now been extinguished or are considered under control. Fire brigade officials advised that many of the fires had started by electricity pylons exploding because of the heat, however, arson is also being investigated in some areas.

The temperature has now dropped below 40 degrees Celsius but a further heatwave next week is forecast.

1 July 2007

  • Fires have destroyed more than 15,000 acres of forests.
  • Approximately 6,200 acres of pine and fire has been destroyed in the Mount Parnitha National Park.
  • Around 3,000 hectares, or about 10% of woodland, has been destroyed near Mount Pelion.

An incendiary device has been found on Mount Parnitha. The Associated Press reported that "Arsonists seeking to clear land for development are suspected in some blazes."

Prime Minitster Costas Karamanlis advised "I stress most emphatically that all burnt forests are automatically scheduled for reforestation".
