Croatian Wildfires 30 August 2007

Wildfires broke out on Croatia’s Adriatic Kornati Islands.

Police identified the cause of the fire as a cigarette butt thrown by a 20-year-old man who worked as a receptionist in the park.

News reports indicate that this Summer, since June, around 13,000 hectares (32,110 acres) of land have been devastated by 900 fires mainly along Croatia’s Adriatic coastline.

Seven firemen were killed as they were attempted to put out fire on the island.

Monday 3 September was declared a national day of mourning.
