Athens Wildfire 25 June 2008

On Wednesday 25 June 2008, a fire in Glyka Nera (20km east of Athens) has seen smoke billowing across the Athens, reminiscent of the wildfires in Greece last year when around 65 people were killed.

A major powerline was destroyed and caused power cuts to Athens.

Fire officials say the blaze is being fought by 20 fire engines, 89 firemen and eight waterbombers.

The fire is continuing, destroying woodland on the northern slopes of Mount Hymettus.

"This is a tough day for us. The fire is burning through dense forest and the prevailing winds are strong," said spokesman Yiannis Kapakis.

He said fires were also raging on the nearby island of Aegina and at Agios Stephanos, north of the capital.
